박지성이 영국인들에게 주는 부끄러운 교훈

Manchester United continue to threaten, just behind Premier League leaders Liverpool and Chelsea. I tipped them for the title again at the beginning of the season and I see no reason to change my mind at this stage.

But the big surprise is how United have managed to stay in touch with the big guns when Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov are playing well below their best, while Carlos Tevez rarely gets to start at all.

So how have United done it? For the answer, you have to look to the squad players, the workers. Men who may not have magic in their boots but supply more than enough passion to make up for it. And no one has personified these qualities better than Park Ji-Sung lately.

The Korean has all the qualities we British used to see and love in our own players. Ji-Sung always plays for the team, you never hear much about his antics off the field and he doesn't seem to have much of an ego at all.

The perception may be different in Seoul, of course, where he is worshipped and idolised. Perhaps he plays up to his star status more where you live, I don't know.

But here in England he is the unsung hero, if you will excuse the pun. Here we hardly ever hear him speak publicly. We don't read about his antics in nightclubs because he doesn't seem to go to any - or if he does he behaves himself nicely. So there are no sensational headlines about Korea's captain. We just admire his work ethic.

Park Ji-Sung is like a blast from the past. He gives everything for his team. He lives for football. He just gets on with it. Fifty years ago our best players here used to perform in front of 100,000 people and then just get on the bus with the fans to go home.

Now I'm sure Ji-Sung has a beautiful car and he deserves one. That's not the point. What I am saying is that he is the kind of guy who would not feel out of place on the bus with the fans. You get the feeling he wouldn't mind travelling home that way. He is loved here for being ordinary.

Something has happened recently though. His battling performances have been highlighted a couple of times on our flagship football television programme here, 'Match of the Day' on the BBC. No longer has Park Ji-Sung gone unrecognised for all his great work. So he is loved even more. But that doesn't seem to have gone to his head. He just lets his football do the talking.

Now I would be really interested to know whether that is your perception in Korea. His image where you live may be completely different. Maybe he acts like a film star and has the showbiz lifestyle of David Beckham when he is at home. You can contact me and tell me if you like.

But I can assure you that when he is in England he is
not a film star or a celebrity and he doesn't act like one. He is an old-fashioned footballer who works very hard. He is a man of the people, who is helping to keep Manchester United in the title hunt when the so-called superstars fail to show any consistency.

And you know, the funny thing is that some of the Premier League fans act more like prima donnas that Park Ji-Sung. The English-based fans of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal don't seem to share much of Park Ji-Sung's passion for the game.
 
Old Trafford, The Emirates and Stamford Bridge are more like libraries on a match day than true football grounds, they are so quiet. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger even had to ask his club's supporters to make more noise recently. So what did they do? The fans booed their own player, Emanuel Eboue, so fiercely that he had to be substituted in a recent game.

What kind of support is that?  Why is it happening? I'll tell you why. Because the fans of these big clubs are now high-earning young men who take busniess clients to games and want everything to go perfectly on match day. They are spoilt rich men who complain like babies when games don't go their way. Yes, the fans here are sometimes even more arrogant than the players - cetrainly more arrogant than Park Ji-Sung.

And then English people have the audacity to argue that the Premier League should not play a few matches abroad each year because the clubs belong to our fans alone. Well excuse me but English fans are behaving so badly that it would do them a lot of good to have their clubs taken away from them for a few weeks every year.

You Koreans could remind the English what true support is really all about. Then the English fans of these clubs might start to appreciate how lucky they are again. 

I get the feeling that Park-Ji-Sung knows how lucky he is. He will be 28 in February and he knows he cannot cover the amount of ground he does in a match forever. So he is working hard and making the most of his talent now - when it matters. 

I salute Ji-Sung and I wish more of our pampered players - and fans - were like him.






맨체스터 유나이티드는 계속해서 리그 선두인 리버풀과 첼시를 추격하고 있다. 시즌 초반 필자는 맨유의 우승을 예상했고 지금도 이런 예측은 변하지 않는다.

하지만 놀라운 점은 어떻게 맨유가 대형 선수들인 크리스티아누 호날두, 웨인 루니, 디미타르 베리바토프 등의 부진과 카를로스 테베즈의 교체출장 속에서도 이런 성적을 유지하느냐이다.

과연 어떻게 된 것일까? 이 답을 알기 위해서는 팀의 일꾼인 스쿼드 플레이어들을 살펴보아야만 한다. 마법과 같은 경기를 펼치지는 않지만 팀에 끊임없이 열정을 실어주는 선수 말이다. 최근 맨유를 살펴보면 박지성보다 이 역할을 더 잘해내는 선수는 없는 듯 하다.

박지성은 과거 우리 영국인들이 영국 선수들을 지켜보며 애정을 갖게 했던 모든 덕목들을 갖추고 있다. 지성은 언제나 팀을 위해 경기에 임하며, 경기장 밖에서 조롱거리가 될만한 행동을 하지 않을 뿐만 아니라 이기적인 선수도 아니다.

물론 그가 숭배되고 우상화되는 서울에서는 약간 다를 지도 모른다. 아마도 여러분들이 살고 있는 곳에서 박지성은 좀 더 자신의 스타로서의 지위를 즐길 지도 모를 일이다.

하지만 다소 재미있게 말하자면 이 곳 잉글랜드에서 그는 조용한 영웅으로 자리매김 하고 있다. 사실 여기서 박지성이 공개적으로 발언하는 경우는 매우 드물다. 우리는 그의 나이트클럽 비화 따위를 듣지 못 하는데 이는 그가 그런 곳을 출입하지 않거나 아니면 어디를 가든 바르게 행동하기 때문일 것이다. 따라서 한국 대표팀 주장에 대한 다소 선정적인 뉴스는 찾아볼 수 없다. 우리는 그의 성실함을 존경할 뿐이다.

박지성은 마치 과거에서 나타난 선수 같다. 그는 팀을 위해 자신의 모든 것을 희생한다. 그는 축구를 위해 사는 사람 같다. 마치 축구만이 전부인 듯이 말이다.

50년전 잉글랜드의 일류 선수들은 10만여 명의 관중들 앞에서 경기를 한 후 그들과 함께 버스를 차고 집에 돌아가곤 했다.

물론 현재의 박지성은 멋진 차를 갖고 있으며 충분히 그럴 자격이 있다. 그것이 중요한 것은 아니다. 필자가 말하려고 하는 점은 박지성이 바로 과거와 같이 버스를 타고 집에 돌아가는 상황에서도 불편함을 느끼지 않을 만큼 담백한 선수라는 사실이다. 필자가 무슨 말을 하고 있는지 이해하고 계시리라 믿는다. 그는 평범한 모습을 통해 사랑 받는 선수이다.

하지만 경기장에서 최근의 박지성은 약간 다른 모습이다. 그의 전투적인 경기내용은 잉글랜드에서 가장 권위 있는 축구 관련 프로그램인 BBC의 “매치 오브 더 데이”에 몇 번이나 소개된 바 있다. 더 이상 박지성은 그의 훌륭한 실력에도 불구하고 인정받지 못 하는 그저 그런 선수가 아니다. 따라서 그에 대한 팬들의 사랑은 더 커지고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 박지성은 변하지 않는 것 같다. 그는 묵묵하게 경기를 통해 자신에 대해 이야기 하고 있다.

필자가 궁금한 것은 한국에서도 박지성에 대해 비슷한 인식을 갖고 있는지 하는 점이다. 아마 한국에서는 전혀 다른 이미지일 지도 모르겠다. 아마도 그가 영화 스타처럼 행동하거나 데이비드 베컴이 영국에서 행동하는 것처럼 연예인의 삶을 살 지도 모르는 일이다. 이런 궁금증에 대해 필자에게 의견을 개진해 주시길 바란다.

하지만 필자가 분명히 말할 수 있는 사실은 최소한 잉글랜드에서의 박지성은 영화 스타나 연예인처럼 행동하지 않는다는 사실이다. 그는 전통적인 축구선수로 매우 열심히 경기에 임한다. 그는 평범한 사람들의 영웅이며 소위 수퍼스타들이 꾸준함을 잃은 채 삽질을 연발하는 동안에도 팀의 우승을 위해 끊임없이 기여하는 선수이다.

그리고 재미 있는 사실은 일부 프리미어 리그 팬들이 성실한 박지성을 뛰어 넘어 마치 오페라의 프리 마돈나처럼 행동하고 다닌다는 사실이다. 특히 맨유, 첼시, 그리고 아스날 팬들은 박지성이 보여주는 경기에 대한 열정을 별로 존중하지 않는 것 같다.

시합이 있는 날의 올드 트라포드, 에미레이츠, 그리고 스탬포드 브릿지는 축구 경기장보다는 도서관 같으며 정적이 감돈다. 심지어 아스날의 아르센 뱅거 감독은 팀의 서포터들에게 좀 더 시끄럽게 해 달라고 부탁한 적도 있다. 그렇다면 관중들은 도대체 무얼 하고 있는가? 최근 경기에서 그들은 자신의 팀 선수인 에마누엘 이보예에게 야유를 쏟아 부으며 결국 그를 교체시켰다.

이건 도대체 어떻게 되먹은 응원인가? 이런 일이 일어나는 이유는 무엇일까? 필자의 의견은 이렇다. 이런 빅클럽들의 관중들은 비즈니스 상 접대를 위해 고객을 데려오는 고소득의 젊은이들이며 이들은 모든 경기가 자신들의 바람대로 풀리기를 원한다. 이들은 경기가 안 풀릴 때 아기들처럼 불평을 일삼는 막되먹은 부자들이다. 그렇다, 이런 팬들은 때때로 선수들보다 더 건방지다. 특히 박지성과 비교하면 이들의 건방짐은 한심한 수준이다.

그리고 이런 잉글랜드 팬들은 클럽은 팬들의 소유물이기에 프리미어 리그가 해외경기를 치루어서는 안 된다고 주장한다. 미안하지만 잉글랜드 팬들은 망신살 뻗치는 행동을 보이기 일쑤이기에 매년 몇 주 정도는 그들의 클럽 경기를 직접 못 보게 하는 정도의 대가는 치루어야 한다는 것이 필자의 생각이다.

한국의 관중들은 잉글랜드인들에게 진정한 응원이 무엇인지 가르쳐 줄 수 있을 것이다. 그제서야 잉글랜드 팬들은 자신의 팀을 존중하고 그들이 얼마나 행운아인지를 깨달을 것이다. 

필자는 박지성 선수가 자신이 얼마나 행운아인지 알고 있다는 사실을 느낀다. 그는 돌아오는 2월에 28세가 될 것이며 영원히 엄청난 운동량을 유지할 수 없음을 조금씩 깨닫게 될 것이다. 그리고 그는 필요할 때마다 자신이 가진 모든 재능을 쏟아내기 위해 부단한 노력을 기울일 것이다. 

필자는 박지성에게 경의를 표한다. 그리고 버릇없는 선수들과 관중들이 그를 닮길 희망한다.
